Sometimes life doesn’t go the way you imagined it would. You may think to yourself that at this point in your life you planned on being somewhere else or even being someone else, but instead you feel stuck where you are now. It’s easy to be angry with yourself or the universe for leading you to what you feel is a dead end. The thing you have to remember is that you can change your mind. You can change your life. You’re the only person who can do it. It will be hard, you’ll worry about what people will think about you, you’ll worry that you will fail, but in the end you will be happy. Here is what to remember when you’re in the process of changing your mind and ultimately your life:
1. You Are In Control
People tend to forget that they are the only ones that control their lives. One day one of my students told me about how he believed that everyone is in control of their life. If you want a certain job, you don’t sit their and wait for it to come to you – you work your ass off to get it. Even if you fail numerous times in the process, you still work to one day achieve that goal.
2. Don’t Give Up
It’s easy to give up when you fail numerous times. It’s very tempting to throw in your hat and go back to watching Netflix and wondering where your life is going. The truth is, not giving up is hard work. You have to commit to your failures as much as you have to commit to your end goal. These two will always go hand in hand. So if you fail, brush it off, know that it’s a part of the process, and keep going.
3. Forget About What People Will Think Of You
When you decide to change your mind and your life, you will likely worry that people will judge you. Why is she/he doing this? Why is she/he leaving? But what if this or this happens? None of those questions matter. The only thing that matters is knowing for yourself that you are making the right choice and that you’re heading down the path you want to be going down.
4. Believe In Yourself
It’s hard telling yourself that you are worthy of success. Everyday I feel like I don’t deserve success – that I am not a good enough person. Everyday I have to remind myself that I do deserve it, everyone does. You have to believe in yourself and if you have to look in the mirror every single day and tell yourself you deserve it and that you’re capable of reaching your goals – then so be it.
5. Life Is Abundant
One of my good friends told me once of something she had heard: that life is abundant. You may think that there are already too many people with the same ideas and the same goals as you and that therefore the world doesn’t need you. But life is abundant, and there are plenty of opportunities for your ideas and goals to be realized. There is enough for everyone to be successful and reach their goals and realize their aspirations.
6. You Are Not Alone
Know that no matter why or how you decide to change your mind – you’re not alone. There are many people who decide to completely overhaul their lives and do something completely different. For me, it was picking up and moving to the other side of the planet to teach English. For others it may mean going back to school, quitting their job to find a new career path, or finally writing that book they always wanted to write. So whenever you are feeling like you are on this journey with no one to turn to, just remember that there is someone out there who feels the same. There is someone else out there on who has to decided to change their mind about their life and where they want it to go.
